17th March edition It's ten years ago this month that I started to write this column. In the news then our vicar, the Revd John Allen, hadjust been appointed and was due to start in June; William IV landlady Tracy Amos had just commissioned Norman Hood tocreate caricatures of her best customers; plans were in place to erect gates on the village hall and Alrewas Dramaticswere rehearsing for their next performance 'Lucky Sods'
My predecessor Mrs Hilda Povey, who had been writing thecolumn since around 1983, kept every cutting she wrote and has recently given them to Diane at the Post Office who haskindly offered to sort them out and catalogue them. The result will be a fascinating insight into life in the villageduring the 1980-1990's. In the mid to late 80's for example residents had just won a battle against the proposed sandand gravel quarry to be located next to the village; Alrewas Youth Club were taking part in a sponsored 95 mile hikealong the Staffordshire Way organised by their leader PC Ben Wilkes; the Scouts were raising money for a new roof; alicence had been granted for 'Teapots' restaurant to open three evenings a week despite objections from residents thatit would cause noise and disruption at closing time; the lounge bar at the cricket club had been refurbished and gascentral heating installed; the Civic Society had planted crocus bulbs at the top of Fox Lane and were in negotiationswith British Waterways to build a bench on the canal side by the Navigation Inn; and the County Council werethreatening to sell off a third of the primary school's land for development which included part of the football pitchand a proposed wildlife area. Hilda had a lovely informal way of writing her column and still takes an active interestin village life.

In the majority of cases the burglaries havebeen in the daytime or early evening with items stolen being large televisions, laptops, game consoles and jewellery.Often entry is made around the back after offenders have knocked on the front door to check if anyone is in, so thepolice urge residents to prevent access to the rear of their property if possible.

28th January edition Our Vicar, the Revd John Allen, is being appointed as a Prebendary of Lichfield Cathedral. This is an honorary titlegranted by the Bishop of Lichfield to selected clergy in recognition of their exceptional service to the church withinthe Diocese.
The office of Prebendary dates back to the twelfth century. During the medaeval period a Prebendarywas a paid priest serving the community within a Prebend (land owned by and providing income for the Cathedral). Interestingly, Alrewas was one of these Prebends. After the Reformation the Prebends ceased to exist but theappointment of Prebendaries in an honorary capacity has continued to the present day. The number in office at any onetime is strictly limited to 27 (number of stalls in the Cathedral) and because the office is an honorary one, there arenow few formal obligations attached to it. Last weekend Alrewas Dramatic Society treated us to a superbperformance of 'The Three Musketeers'. Credit must be given to an excellent (if somewhat cheesy!) script written byDave Crump backed by some fine comic performances, particularly Brian Trappett and Gareth Snipe as Musketeers, NigelCrane as the camp Duke of Buckingham and Tony Jones (a true professional) as 'the dame' Mrs Porthole. Great acting andsinging from old favourites Isy Hill as DArtagnan, Paula Dumolo as Constance and Michelle Trappett as Milady and acouple of new faces showing promise Rebecca Kavanagh (Roquefort) and Mary-Lou Goodbody (Innkeeper). All this, backedby a highly skilled and dedicated technical crew that include costume and set designers, you would have been hardpushed to have been to a better pantomime anywhere this season.

Neighbourhood Watch and the local police team wish all residents and safe and peaceful2011. Only two calls have been made to the police since the start of the year. One concerned a house burglary committedover the festive period which has since been cleared up by the police. The offender came from another area and admittedto many other offences. Bogus officials and tradesmen continue to be a problem in the area where criminals try manytricks to get into homes, such as claiming there may be a leak, wanting to install a burglar alarm, claiming theresident may be entitled to a council tax refund or their computer may have developed a problem. On no account shouldresidents deal with such enquiries (either over the phone or at the door), never divulge personal details and only dealwith reputable firms.

On 27th March 2011all residential households in the United Kingdom will be taking part in a census. Since 1801 a day has been chosenevery ten years for this purpose (except in 1941 during the war). The census provides an excellent source ofinformation about the population and enables central and local government, health authorities and many otherorganisations to identify need for housing, education, health and transport services for years to come. For examplesupermarkets use census statistics to work out the kind of foods they need to sell and water companies use the data tomake sure there's enough water for everyone. The census statistics also identify the needs for local services incommunities and the funding given to local authorities. Just 100 people failing to complete their form could mean ourlocal authority losing £500,000 over a 10 year period so the Office of National Statistics appeal to allresidents to complete the information when they receive it.
There will also be temporary positions for peoplewith local knowledge. You can apply at www.censusjobs.co.uk or call 0845 3040960 for an application form.

23rd September edition Staffordshire County Council's Pavement Engineer has updated the Parish Council regarding pavements in Alrewas and hasstated that, with the exception of Main Street, all of the other publicly maintained footways will be treated withfootway slurry this financial year. This is a preventative maintenance treatment which keeps them in good condition toreduce the need for more expensive work in the future. The treatment will cover around 24,000 metres square of pavementin Alrewas. Main Street was originally also programmed for footway slurry but following a detailed site investigationinto existing kerbing levels and condition the decision has been made to reconstruct these footways in their entiretyand the original kerb slabs be retained in keeping with the character of the village. This however requires asubstantial investment which will have to be broken down and delivered over successive financial years. The first phaseof these works will commence in 2011, and the plan is to start around Main Street shops. This may mean reclaiming kerbsfrom the extremities of Main Street (with replacement in the form of more conventional kerbs) for their reuse aroundthe central village area.
On another note, the Parish Council will be complaining about the poor resurfacing ofExchange Road and requesting the re-instatement of the yellow lines, and also the removal of the wheely bins behind theshops which continuously block the pavement on Exchange Road.

The back section (including the rear storeroom andtoilet area) is in urgent need of repair to the point that if nothing is done within the next five years there is areal risk of it collapsing. In 2003 new vinyl flooringwas put down to replace the old carpet tiles, in 2004 central heating was installed, in 2006 a new toilet block builtand in 2008 the kitchen refurbished. The building is now in use every weekday evening by youth groups and is availablefor daytime and weekend bookings. She commended the hard work of James Roddick in reinstating the village bonfire nighton behalf of the scouts, Group Scout Leader Andy Cheadle for his continuous commitment to the group and Kevin Wilkinsonfor maintaining an excellent website www.alrewasscouts.org. She paid tribute those that had left over the last eightyears, their biggest loss being Beaver Leader Kim Thomas in 2004.
Being part of the community is importantfor the group. The Annual Duck Race is a popular village event and is held every July (except in 2008 when the riverflooded and it had to be postponed to September) and the footpath by the George & Dragon was renovated a few yearsago by the scouts and is now maintained by the cubs, funded by the Civic Society.

29th April edition On Sunday 18th April sixteen 1st Alrewas cubs and scouts took part in a sponsored water carry. Walking a distance ofjust over three miles from Alrewas to Barton Turn via the canal, they carried between them approximately 80 litres ofwater.
The activity gave them the chance to experience the reality of life for many children in Africa who do nothave ready access to water. It also enabled them to raise funds for Pump Aid, a water charity. Pump Aid helps toprovide low tech water and sanitation solutions for villages in rural Africa.
They hope to raise at least£500 which is the sum needed to pay for the materials to construct a well. The event was one of many which tookplace on 18th April as part of 'Run for Water 2010' coordinated by Pump Aid.
At the Alrewas ArtsAGM Chairman Graham Sellors reported that once again the main focus of the group was organising and promoting Live andLocal shows in the village hall. Over the past year there have been three; 'Dancing in my dreams' which was chosenbecause of its potential appeal to young people, 'The Old School Dance' and Simon Mayer and Hilary James, both thelatter bringing with them a large following (many of the tickets were sold to people travelling from outside) but weremuch enjoyed by Alrewas residents too.
Little profit is made on these shows, the main aim being to providehigh quality professional entertainment in the village at affordable prices (the shows are very heavily subsidised) andcontribute to the sense of community for which Alrewas is known.
Alrewas Arts also maintains the willowsculpture by the lock near Jaipur's. Roger Mitchell has recently taken over the upkeep of this and the intention wasthat the proceeds from the raffles would finance this upkeep, although this is not enough at the moment.
Graham thanked Sally Stanton who, after 10 years of organising, administrating and liaising with Live and Local, wasstepping down and welcomed Carol Ruttley as the new co-ordinator. He himself also stepped down as Chairman and RichardEvans has taken on the role.
The large inflatable sign near Leavesley International is receiving complaints byresidents. The Parish Council has passed it on to Fradley as it is not in this parish.

The sort of thing they likewould be jerk chicken, tortilla wraps, chillis
garlic flavoured salt/ items, boiled sweets (very popular),processed cheese, etc. If you can help please contact Marie on 791183.

25th March edition A group of protesters were at the District Council Offices in Lichfield at 8.30am on 17th March to lobby representativesas they arrived for the final meeting of the West Midlands Regional Assembly. Their aim was to draw attention to thedisproportionate amount of sand and gravel Staffordshire is supplying to the West Midlands Region, and to influence thevote that was taking place this morning. As a result of that vote, there will be a 10% reduction in the amount of sandand gravel Staffordshire currently contributes to the West Midlands, which means that some of the proposals for newquarries throughout Staffordshire should not need to be adopted. This great step forward is mainly due to the hard workof Anne Anderson and the Gravel Protest Group and they would like to thank the hundreds of people who have supportedthem in their quest for this reduction.

Following the recent bad weather, the highways department have identified approximately 1200 new potholes inStaffordshire, in addition to the existing road defects. They have received several complaints from parish councils andmembers of the general public about the quality of the pothole repairs but have stated that 'to ensure the roads aresafe enough to drive on, temporary fixes are being used until a permanent fix can be achieved at a later date, andalthough they are not attractive they do stop the roads from being a danger to car users'. They recognise that thequality of the roads, especially in the rural areas, is not good but are investing an extra £30 million onhighways maintenance over the next three years.

He reported that due to the tremendous opposition they have received from the community an independentconsultant has been appointed to review the proposed levels.
The budget for 2010/11 was approved. There willbe no increase to ratepayers this year from the Parish Council's apportionment. Grants to village organisations willinclude contributions towards the Scout bonfire and the Alrewas Arts Festival again and £1000 to the Cricket Clubtowards the resurfacing of the junior practice facilities. Following the meeting with County Highways in December they have advised that the pavements are intended to beresurfaced this summer, though not a full reconstruction. However there are proposals to resurface other roads within the village. Any workundertaken ideally should be co-ordinated with improvements to the area outside the shops.

The resident looked out onto Main Street at 1.30am on Monday 19th January and saw the two men actingsuspiciously near Post Office Road. His 999 call resulted in several police vehicles arriving quickly, arrests made anda vehicle seized. It resulted in one man being charged and may bring further offences to light. This follows on fromother arrests made in Alrewas last year due to the good work of our police team and support from members of thepublic.

21st January edition The Alrewas Arts Festival committee are delighted to announce a sneak preview of the award winning comedy 'Beyond ThePole' at the 'Fleapit' before it goes on general release next month.
The film stars Steven Mangan (Green Wing)and Helen Baxendale (Friends, Cold Feet) and was part filmed in Alrewas. A house in Main Street was converted into aset and used as a meeting place for the actors and directors with some of the locals drafted in as extras. Duringfilming Helen Baxendale agreed to become Patron of Alrewas Dramatics Society, partly because of her local connections(she grew up on Shenstone). Her commitments have meant that she cannot attend as many productions as she would like. She, husband David Williams (Director of Beyond the Pole) and their three kids were on the way to see 'Robin Hood' lastJanuary when their car broke down and they had to get towed back to London - but they called the William 1V whodelivered a bottle of Champagne. It is hoped they manage to get up to see another production soon, maybe the nextPantomime later this year. David, however, is planning to come along to the showings of Beyond the Pole.
Thefilm is provisionally scheduled for 30th January, but confirmation of date, times and tickets will be printed here nextweek.
Alrewas Neighbourhood Watch wishes all residents a safe and trouble free year ahead. A quietChristmas and new year was no doubt due to the very cold spell but everyone should stay alert in view of the manytravelling criminals that operate in the Midlands. The police surgery held last Saturday was attended by quite a fewresidents. No serious issues were bought to the attention of the police but several residents were still concerned withthe number of motorists ignoring the waiting restrictions near the shops and the infrequent visits by the districtcouncil officers that enforce them.

The box was packed and sent out by the very kind ladies of the Alrewas WI. Please pass on my warmest regardsand thank the ladies for their kindness.'

Amey haveinformed the Parish Council that the drainage issue on Micklehome Drive is being progressed as a matter of urgencyhowever the solution may take some time to complete. They are dismayed at the initial road construction that doesn'tseem to have taken into regard to the drainage requirement. The gully in the middle of the junction was obviously inthe original kerb line but now it is in the middle of nowhere and there is no channelling to it rendering itineffective. No additional drainage has been installed which is why pedestrian crossings are flooding.
TheRev'd Brian Weaver was the speaker at Alrewas WI's first meeting of the year with his talk 'Reach for theSkies'. Thefelling of mature trees in the village was discussed at the December Parish Council meeting following concerns thatsome were being felled without permission. Permission has to be granted to cut down or prune any trees within theconservation area and applications are passed by Councillor Stanhope (the Parish Council tree representative). A recentrequest for felling further trees on Southlands (Daisy Lane) was refused. If any residents have concerns they shouldspeak to Councillor Stanhope.
Following complaints to the County Council about the state of the pavements onMain Street some patch repairs have been made and a council engineer is to survey the state of the pavement betweenExchange Road and Fox Lane. Walton Homes will be installing coachlamps with sensors on the properties fronting the footpath between Walkfield and Fox Lane which will provide naturalsurveillance lighting to the area. The grass verge along the footpath which is overgrown at present will be transferredto the plots so that it will always be maintained.
Discussions continue between the Parish and County Councilregarding the Bailey Bridges by the Millstream. County have stated that repairing them is not a viable option because ofthe high costs involved, even a small maintenance scheme has been estimated at £60k. Installing separatefootbridges may be an option but will cost around £250k and resources are not available at present. The Baileybridges were erected in 1966 as a temporary measure and it is the engineer's opinion that both structures have reachedthe end of their natural life. They do know who owns the bridges but not if they have the wherewithal to pay for theirrepairs. The Parish Council will continue to push for a satisfactory solution.

24th December edition During the last few months the life of Alrewas resident Carol Wedgbury has revolved around boxes. She decided to do herbit for the soldiers in Afghanistan and gather a few Christmas boxes for the troops, aiming for around 30-40. But withthe help of Alrewas WI , the 1st Alrewas Guides and the Women's Section of the Alrewas British Legion Club they haveput together over 100 boxes.
Carol is co-ordinating it all with the aid of someone in the Mercian Regimentand hopefully they will reach their point of contact, namely a soldier who lives locally and is currently serving inAfghanistan . He has been instructed to distribute the parcels to the British staff at Camp Alamo , giving priority toservice men and women from Staffordshire and the Midlands . He has been asked that if he gives them to persons fromSurrey and the 'twee parts' of England , he is to give them a lecture on the lovely lasses and ladies of Alrewas andhow green and pleasant Staffordshire is!
However it's not just a case of collecting in boxes that peoplehave made up. The boxes can weigh no more that two kilos so in many cases they have had to be unwrapped, the contentsredistributed and then wrapped up again. Then there is the job of double wrapping them in brown paper to post andindividually addressing every single one in different handwriting and spreading them out to post.
Carolwould like to thank all those that contributed and to the George & Dragon and Alrewas Post Office for acting ascollection points.
As there are still donations coming in, it has been decided to carry on sending parcels to thetroops in the New Year.
Alrewas resident James Roddick of Micklehome Drive is defending his title in theHoarcross Downhill Challenge on 30th December. His co-driver this year will be his brother Nick and they are raising money for Birmingham Children'sHospital.
Travelling criminals again targeted Alrewas during the early hours of Wednesday 16th December. Alocal resident saw three men carry something in Main Street near the George & Dragon then throw it into a bluetransit type van parked near the Post Office. The men wore balaclavas and one man struck the resident in the facecausing minor injury. The next day a Main Street resident found the canvas roof of her sports car had been removedafter the alarm had been immobilised. A blue transit van has recently been connected to the theft of metal from KingsBromley so if this type of vehicle is seen again in suspicious circumstances it should be reported to the police. Thenon-emergency number is 0300 1234455.

Alrewas and other villages in the areahave recently been subject to attacks by travelling criminals. Last week the front door of a house in Kings BromleyRoad was forced but the house alarm caused the offenders to leave without stealing anything. The same evening a windowin Park Road was forced but again the offenders escaped without taking anything.
The previous week residentsin Daisy Lane disturbed three men in their home at around 1.30am. They stole property and escaped. The same week a carwas broken into on Mill End Lane.

3rd December edition The Civic Society has now obtained quotes and are applying for funding to renovate the banks of the Millstream to claimback around four feet of land that has been lost over the years due to erosion. The area regularly floods, a problemgoing back to when the Mill stopped operating and the gates under the mill which controlled the flow of water down tothe Millstream were closed.
Every year the Civic Society plant more bulbs in the village and are responsiblefor the beautiful show every year in Spring. This year they have given the bulbs to the Cubs who have planted them alongthe George and Dragon footpath and to a Mill End Lane resident who has planted them on the verges by the churchallotments.
The committee have a rota to keep the Millstream area tidy but it still gets littered so pleasecould residents help by taking their litter home. The reason why there is no litter bin there is that the swans used todrag out the paper (particularly the fish and chip papers) to find anything edible. Since the removal of the bin thelitter problem has decreased.
The Civic Society celebrate 40 years this year and currently has 92 members.Bulb planting and maintenance of the Millstream are just two of the many ways they help keep our village beautiful. Ifyou would like to support their work, either by becoming a member (for just £5 a year) or by joining thecommittee please contact Nigel Moss on 01283 790088.

As usual the set and costumes were excellent and therewas some fine acting, in particular Tony Wilson, well loved for his comic roles but this time giving a mesmerisingperformance as the mysterious and chilling Inspector Goole.
Their next production is Shakespeare's 'TwelfthNight' in March.
The judges comments for this year's Best Kept Village Competition have been received. Theystated 'All Saint's Church was very well maintained with few weeds, clear paths and a sensible conservation area. TheMethodist hall and Village hall were also neat and tidy. All the pub surrounds and carparks were very well maintainedwith a commendable absence of litter, except for a small amount at the William IV which distracted somewhat from anexcellent beer garden.
There were weeds around the telephone box and bus shelter and some litter. All theseats/benches were in good condition but there was some weeds around benches at the Millstream. There were twoexcellent well maintained signs at the entrances to the village. The War Memorial was good overall but the surroundinggarden just needed a little more care. Public open spaces were attractive and well maintained but the Miilsteam wasspoilt by litter on occasions. There was some dog mess on Walkfield on one visit.
All the private gardenswere maintained to a high standard. The overall impression of the village was quite good and there was a good overallfeeling to the village and the standard of open spaces, churchyard and public houses. There is potential forimprovements on Best Kept Village awareness, posters and map and with a bit more concerted community effort, particularly on litter, there is every chance that Alrewas could achieve a really good result in 2010.'
Ifanyone would like to take on the role of BKV Co-ordinator for 2010 please call Jane Reilly on 01283 791470, who hasdone it for five years and would like a break. Alrewas will not be taking part next year unless a new Co-ordinatorcomes forward.
